Basketball brings hope

The GiveSome Foundation, established in 2015, is a great example of a civil society group that is using sport as a tool for youth development in South Africa. The foundation believes that basketball can help improve physical health, promote teamwork, and build confidence and self-esteem.

Access to basketball facilities, coaches, and training programmes are provided to young people experiencing social difficulties. Mentorship and educational programmes are offered to help them develop their life skills and pursue their goals.

Executive director, Sithembiso Matanga says, “One of our key initiatives is an annual Basketball Without Borders camp. This camp brings together top young basketball players from across Kimberley to participate in training and skill-building exercises, as well as educational sessions focused on leadership, character development, and social responsibility. The support from the Letsatsi Borutho Trust has been beneficial for us by providing funding, resources, partnership opportunities, and expertise. The Trust has helped us to grow and better serve young people in the communities.”
