A taxi rank in Ritchie

During the 2022 community consultation forum meeting held in Ritchie, two requests were made: to build a taxi rank in Ritchie and provide support to the Ritchie taxi association to improve its operations, and to increase the age limit for bursary applicants.

Commuters in Ritchie wait for taxis under a tree at the roadside, in extreme heat, humidity, cold, or in the rain. Commuters are also at risk of being robbed, especially those traveling in the early hours of the morning.

The Trust has committed to assist in building this much-needed taxi rank. The new taxi rank will create a safer and more comfortable space for commuters. The Trust hopes that it will also promote other local economic development outcomes such as creating jobs (car washing, for example), and the development of a resource hub.

At the community consultation forum, the taxi association proposed building a taxi rank on the same spot under the tree. After follow-up by the Trust, this was presented to the Trust through a building plan (see below) for approval and funding.

This pilot phase marks the beginning of a long-term partnership between the Trust and these organisations. Going forward, they will lead the implementation of youth development programmes across Greenpoint, Platfontein, and Ritchie as priority areas, not excluding requests from other areas within 50 km radius from the Droogfontein Solar Power, ensuring that young people in these communities have access to sustained support and opportunities.
