Creating a safe space for people living with disabilities

Sebastian’s Shelter for the Disabled, established in 2017, was created to fill a critical gap in the community for learners with severe to profound intellectual disabilities. Recognizing the need for more than just education, the Centre now also supports parents by providing essential care and guidance. Additionally, it offers a nutritional food programme for the elderly, ensuring they receive the nourishment they need.

The organisation is dedicated to empowering and developing not only children with disabilities but also their families and the broader community. It provides daily care and follow-up services through a strong referral system with key partners like the Department of Social Development, the Department of Education, and the Department of Health, amongst others.

Thanks to funding from the Letsatsi Borutho Trust, the Centre was able to significantly improve its facilities:

  • The Early Childhood Development (ECD) section saw the construction of a new building with two classrooms, a kitchen, and an office, allowing for an increased intake of children from 35 to 56 in 2024 and a rise in staff from 2 to 7 teachers. The office was also equipped with an administrative station to enhance operations and communication, and a fully fitted kitchen was installed.
  • The Soup Kitchen benefited from a new kitchen that increased the number of meals served, with faster preparation times, enabling more adults and children to be fed.
  • Additionally, the After Care Services now provide accommodation space for learners to do homework and receive a snack.

The organization strives to create a safe, healthy, and supportive environment where all learners can thrive, focusing on fostering a welcoming space for those with special needs, helping them develop outside of a stigmatized society.
