Elcon Helping Hand (EHH) NPC was established in July 2012 with a clear vision: to enhance the livelihoods of previously disadvantaged individuals living with disabilities. Over the years, EHH has implemented numerous projects to support both people with disabilities and those in need. These initiatives focus on humanitarian aid, sports development, school curriculum support, healthcare, training and development, and infrastructure assistance. To date, more than 1,238 individuals have benefited from these programmes.
One of the most pressing challenges remains food security and nutrition for institutions and individuals with disabilities. Recognizing this need, EHH launched an agricultural programme aimed at providing food to disabled individuals while also generating income through the sale of produce to local nurseries. Since 2016, the Groenmyn Nursery has been a sustainable, disability-operated initiative managed in partnership with the Northern Cape Mental Health NPO. The nursery employs 21 individuals with disabilities, all of whom reside on-site. Its operations include seedling cultivation, retail nursery and depot management, and greenhouse maintenance. Through this initiative, individuals receive training, skills development, empowerment, and entrepreneurial support to help them enter the labour market.
Seedlings are supplied to local nurseries in and around Kimberley. However, a recent setback occurred when the vehicle used for deliveries broke down, halting production and cutting off income. A temporary solution was found through vehicle rental, but the costs proved unsustainable. At this critical juncture, EHH applied for support through a grant proposal and was successfully awarded funding from the Trust, ensuring the continuation of this vital programme.
Through the support of the Letsatsi Borutho Trust, EHH was able to acquire a Foton Miler Truck. Owner, Laurence Van Heeren says: “This new vehicle significantly enhances our nurseries’ operational efficiency and independence allowing them to expand their outreach and timeously delivery. The truck not only improves the service capabilities but also strengthens the commitment to providing meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. By growing our impact within the community, we reinforce our vision of a thriving, inclusive business model that champions diversity and resilience. We are excited about this advancement as it enables us to better serve our community and further our mission.”
